The department was opened in 2015 to become the first department of the Portuguese language in the Arab Republic of Egypt to grant a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Al-Alsun in Portuguese Language and Literature.

Portuguese is spoken in several countries and regions known as the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, CPLP, and includes the following members:

Portugal:

The Portuguese language originated in it and moved from it to many countries and regions, and we have a common history with Portugal, especially during the Arab rule of the southern Iberian Peninsula in Andalusia. Portugal is located in Europe and thus an official language in the European Union.

Brazil in South America:

A founding member of the El Mirco Sur “South American Common Market” grouping, and therefore the Portuguese language is an official language in this grouping with which Egypt concluded a free trade agreement in and Brazil has historical relations with the Arab world through the large Arab diaspora there.

Portuguese speaking African countries:

It is Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome Principe, so Portuguese is an official language of the African Union, and Egypt is a founding member of it.

In Asia, the Portuguese language is found:

Historically in East Timor, in China’s Macau, and in India’s Goa.

Here, the Portuguese language department takes modern and interesting curricula that take into account the requirements of society and respect cultural differences, The department also maintains friendship and cooperation relations with academics from around the world.
